Provincetown

The Hat Sisters.  The Lobster Pot.  Judy Tenuda.

Those were the highlights of my weekend in Provincetown for Twist and Carnival 2007.  On Thursday, the Carnival Parade snailed down Commercial Street to throngs of fabulously dressed men and women in their gay apparel to the theme of "Fairy Tales."  I was honored to ride in the same convertible as the locally infamous and beloved Hat Sisters.  These men, who have been together as partners for over 20 years, show their accessorizing skills with bigger-than-life hats that are decorated elaborately.  For the Carnival Parade,  the couple impressed the crowd with the Goose that Laid the Golden Egg.

And Sue.  Sue was a driver for the King and Queen of the parade, and this lovely woman was our driver last year when Dennis Hensley and I shared Grand Marshall duties with Cyndi Lauper.  Sue remembered me, and I remembered the fact she worked at the historic Lobster Pot restaurant in P'town. Unfortunately last year, I didn't get a chance to stay in town long enough to dine with Sue, but made sure this year to try it out.  And the Lobster Pot proved to be some of the best seafood I have ever had, something the long lines outside the door would agree with.  Thanks, Sue.

HOW am I going to finish this great dessert?!?

And last but certainly not least, the Goddess.  Judy Tenuda was the headliner Saturday night at a concert I emceed at Town Hall, which served as the big finale to a great week of Carnival celebration.  Following her fabulous show, there was an after-party at Club Purgatory where Judy graciously greeted all her fans.  And to bartender Ryan, I loved your Alabama t-shirt.  Made me feel a Southern connection in New England.

 Judy and Me

Sunday proved to be travel day.  After taking the Ferry back to Boston, Judy, John Amaturo from Twist/GLEE, and myself hung out at Logan Airport allll dayyyyy.  John's flight to New York departed first, leaving Judy and me to peruse through a stack of entertainment magazines in the terminal for roughly 3 or 4 hours.  I am now an expert on why K Fed wants the kids taken away from Britney, and have noticed the pattern of Tom Cruise always looking at Suri in pictures and never at Katie.  I still think there's something off by that whole thing.

Overall, Provincetown is a "Gay Mecca," where the majority of residents are gay.  Thus, the celebration is called Carnival instead of Pride, since every day is Pride in Provincetown.  Every gay person needs to be in that environment at least once to see how it could be for them, especially if they are still in the closet.

I LOVE the Hat Sisters and have never even met them!(Although one does look a lot like my best friend's stepfather, but the other is not her father and I think I am safe in assuming he's not cheating) ;o) It never amazes me to see gay/lesbian couples that have been together for so long. In my family at least, out of my mother and 3 aunts and uncles, my aunts have been together the longest (since before I can remember) and the other's have been divorced at least once, one three times. I think us straight people need to take a few pointers relationship-wise from the gay community don't ya think? Maybe the divorce rate would go down.
