Lesbians Aren't So Bad
So I am in studio with Twist, and we just recorded an interview with Joan Rivers that will air this weekend. And in the interview she made a comment about lesbian fans, and how they don't laugh like other fans. And there are a lot of times even during Twist, which is geared toward a gay audience, that lesbian barbs are thrown as if we have no sense of humor and are hard to get along with.
I got to tell you, my lesbian friends are far funnier than many other people in my life. But the difference is usually these women blossom best in an all-female environment. It isn't that we don't like men, we all have men in our lives, but sometimes we have a more sophisticated pallet when it comes to humor and what we'll respond to.
I get when straight guys are critical, since some don't know how to respond to women who they have no shot with. But what concerns me, gay men are critical too. And most of gay media is run by gay men! It has made me realize lesbians really need to step up and provide the ladies with more selection in magazines, papers, and opportunities to have something geared positively toward us. Especially if, as I have seen, many consider us like an elephant in the room....what to do with the lesbians?
I'm proud to be a lesbian, and an out lesbian in media, and would love your feedback on what new magazine you'd like to see, and what articles you want in it!

Although I am not a lesbian, I love sevearal and am a little bit offended by the Joan River's thing. I believe she is Jewish, and am sure she would be offended by such a generalization about Jewish people. That being said, has she ever seen Ellen???? She is one of the most funny comedians of our time I think...and a LESBIAN! Melissa I think you are such an ispiration to young lesbians everywhere that you should not hide or be ashamed of who you are or who you love. Enough rambling, I think a lesbian geared magazine would be wonderful, and I would love to subscribe! Let me know when its published.
P.S. I think you are pretty damn funny too!

Melissa,
I have thought often how wonderful it would be to have a female version of DAVID or interest mag in the ATL! I feel like we are left out in this world of 1000 gay bars and what, 2, maybe, lesbian bars!
I am a writer, and have been thinking of a mag that says it's cool, no matter what you are, to like girly things, to like butch things, to like a little of both. Whether you wear dresses or polo shirts or wife-beaters, let's find out! I would love to get involved in this project if you do indeed do something.
Maybe we could rally up some girls and get writing, and see what comes of it? It could really encompass everything. Start a new fad!
Thanks for the thoughts. I am glad I'm not the only one who feels lacking in this!
