Ladies and Gentlemen.....What's His Name

Over the weekend I got a new kitty.  He's a full-bred Siamese kitten who has yet been named.

The decision to get another animal began about the time my dog Toby got sick.  I have a Siamese/Tabby mix, named Akima, who was big buddies with Toby and I was concerned about how she would handle his passing.  But since Katie Jo had just gotten a new dog, Akima wasn't entirely alone.

But after trips home to Nashville and to Orlando for Bert's Big Adventure, I did notice a sense of clinginess from her when I returned, moreso than when Toby was alive and I would take the same trips.

So, the decision was made.  I would get her a little brother.

Still not ready to get another dog after Toby, I decided on a cat.  Over the years when I have gotten cats I always looked for a Siamese, since that is what I grew up with.  And both Akima and an older cat I got years ago were Siamese mixes from the Atlanta Humane Society.  In my 14 years in Atlanta, I have only seen one full-bred male Siamese at a shelter, and unfortunately the timing was not right for me to introduce that cat at home.

Wanting to find a match to my first cat, I found a family in Jasper who breeds Siamese and made the trip to pick him up on Saturday.

Getting used to his new home in my guest bedroom, he and Akima had an accidental face-off Sunday morning.  She was able to pry the door open, and when I rushed upstairs to referee any potential fight, the new kitten naively rushed Akima - only to jump back in shock at her spittingly-hissy response.  No fur flew, no blood was shed, and both cats have resorted to their safe corners in separate rooms.

But what about a name? I am finding that people certainly have an opinion on naming an animal.  When I even mention the potential frontrunner, people tense their brow in intense contemplation before offering their own, better, suggestion.

I'm sure some of you are even wondering about the name Akima, who is Drew Barrymore's character in "Titan, A.E."

I do think it's important to learn the personality of the animal too, before making the permanent decision on a name.  So, What's-His-Name will slowly make his way out of the guest bedroom....and I will slowly decide what to call him.

I would suggest Anakin. I named my chihuahua Anakin and it seems to fit him, even though he is small. Plus, it is an "A" name like Akima and it is from Star Wars.! Come on, that in itself is a reason to pick the name Anakin LOL. Go over to the Dark Side, Melissa, you know you want to.

I love the name Anakin. It may be tough at first calling either one since the names are similar...but he looks like an Anakin!

I like that Akima came from a character you liked previously... read any good books or seen any good movies lately? That's how I've named my last few animals... "Aziza" was from A Thousand Splendid Sons... "Shiloh" from the book of the same name...

The right name will come to you... he's a cutie!! (And I don't even like cats that much...)

    Good luck,

He's so freaking cute!!! I think my smallest cat has some Siamese in her because she talks non-stop... I love it. She was named Ayumi (the Ay sounds like eye) when I got her, but it just never seemed to fit. So, now she's Elphaba aka Elphie like in Wicked. But, your little one looks like Ayumi would fit him better. Good luck finding the right name, kittens are the best!

I like Amika a lot. This way you can have a little daily reminder of Akima. What a better way to honor Akima's memory.

    Melissa!
I just have to tell you how jealous I am. I have a 3 year old female Siamese/Tabby mix that I rescued from behind a dumpster at Pizza Hut when she was just a baby. I have been dying to find her a Siamese brudder, but want a rescued animal.
I think you should name him Ratcha. It comes from Sanskrit, meaning "king,or royal". Fitting as he will be the little king of your household!
Congrats on your new addition, and if you even need a cat sitter, let me know!

how freakin' adorable is this kitty?! i want to pet him. it took me forever, too, to pick oliver for my orange tabby's name. i was assisted by baby name websites and a roommate. if you're still stumped after everyone weighs in, try that. you can usually find names from all over the world, and they're alphabetized in case you're set on a certain letter at the beginning (as others seem to be encouraging another 'A' name ). my two cents. good luck, and give him a scratch on the head for me!

Melissa - Your new baby is beautiful!! I have a Siamese too, and they are such fantastic furry-babies (and quite vocal too)! Enjoy your new kitten and I'm sure eventually Akima will learn to tolerate him, and maybe even like him!!

Melissa, your new little boy is SO precious! I have two Siamese kitties as well (a bluepoint and a sealpoint.) I got my seal girl from the very same family in Jasper, I am pretty sure. She's the best cat ever, so I know your new addition will be wonderful as well! Have you found a name for him yet? Don't worry -- Akima will come around. You will catch them cuddling in no time.
