I Learned How To Play Sudoku at Max & Erma's
Yep, that's right. Only a few years behind the Western curve of learning to play this Asian puzzle, I figured it out on my phone while waiting on a To Go order at Max & Erma's near Perimeter Mall.
I admit that I was actually intimidated by the number grids when Sudoku hit the country by storm, having never played the game before and unable to figure it out immediately. So when I sat at the bar in the restaurant yesterday, I realized the only game on my phone was Sudoku. What the hell, let me try again, I thought. It was better than sitting awkwardly by myself watching the rest of the lunch crowd chow down.
My phone did not provide instructions to the game, so it was up to me again to figure it out. Fortunately for me, the phone would not allow me to plug in a number into a square where it didn't belong. So I got confused and frustrated again not recognizing the patterns, yet was given proper direction on what not to do. I quit the game and decided to stare down the bar.
I reminded myself that I was a smart woman, and that figuring out puzzles used to be a fun past time for me and my family as a kid. I can do this as an adult.
I turned it on again, concentrated on what I might be missing, and forced to sit there doing nothing else *enter angelic choir music here* I got it! Similar to the realization that Bruce Willis was dead in that movie, I figured out what was going on and felt a mixture of satisfaction for being part of the Sudoku club and embarrassment that something so easy intimidated me for so long.
So if you run into me at the bookstore buying puzzles, please refrain from reminding me that Sudoku was so 2005.
My dad got me hooked on them a while ago. Now that you posted this I know I'll be back searching for some new ones again. There are also online ones at ajc.com and brainbashers.com. Enjoy!

Pffft. Sudoku is still so 2008 (although 2009 will really belong to Kakuro). Either way... I get my daily dose from http://sudoku.com.au/
