Katie Jo and Prostitution

I had actually forgotten about it until I checked my e-mail yesterday. I knew Katie had a date planned for last night, and that it involved a fundraiser, but I didn't give it a second thought since our trip to Florida over the weekend took mental priority. Even Katie forgot about it. Funny how a seemingly unimportant calendar entry like this turned into a very special evening.
It was called the "Find Your Way Home" concert and took place at Eddie's Attic in Decatur. Featuring Grammy-winning songwriters Don Schlitz and Marcus Hummon along with Julie Roberts and Emily Saliers, Katie and I enjoyed songs meant to empower. Why? Because the night benefitted Magdelene and the Thistle Farm.
Magdalene is a 2-year residential community founded in Nashville 13-years ago and serves women who have survived lives of prostitution, violence, and abuse. Thistle Farms is a non-profit business operated by the women of Magdalene. By hand, the women create natural bath and body products with all sales proceeds go back into the program.
At the event, which was part of a national prison tour, we sang along to songs made famous by Kenny Rogers, Alison Krauss, the Dixie Chicks, Randy Travis, Rascal Flats, and Sara Evans. Even I, who is not a country music fan, cried a time or two.
So thank you, Katie, for sharing this experience with me. For more information on the work Magdelana does, click here.
Melissa, Thank you so much for the blog posting and for coming to the benefit concert at Eddie's Attic! I have been volunteering at Thistle Farms for 2 years and it has truly changed my life. Thanks again!
