Formaldehyde in My Furniture

A law was recently passed by President Obama that will limit the amount of formaldehyde allowed in wood, which may lead to higher furniture prices.

Wh...wh...WHAT?!?  That stinky stuff from biology class is in my furniture?

Apparently formaldehyde is commonly used in inexpensive furniture and cabinets constructed from particle board.  More expensive furniture is generally made from hardwoods and domestic hardwood plywood that doesn't use formaldehyde.  The EPA has linked exposure to high levels of formaldehyde to illnesses ranging from watery and burning eyes to sore throats and nausea.  (By the way, the EPA didn't care when I similar symptoms in Mr Grimsley's class back in '86.)

I'm afraid to know what chemicals are in other everyday products.  But I have a feeling you're going to tell me.

There's a chemical used as a fire retardant in rugs/carpets, matresses, etc, that's been linked to hyperactive thyroid disease. Booyah!

You should research what's in matresses...& children's clothing from Wal-Mart....

New Zealand banned children's clothing from China due to the excessive amount of dyes - well over the govt's approved limit - & they caused breathing problems similar to asthma.

Not to dash your hopes of avoiding formaldehyde, but it's also in you everyday... in your cells generated during the metabolism of certain amino acids.

Granted, the amounts are teeny tiny compared to what's in furniture.

    Good Day, Melissa---
Yeah, you knew we would write in and tell you more than you wanted to know about this subject. Formaldehyde is in everything! All those diet cokes and Nutrasweet stuff that we all eat and drink...well that stuff turns into the equivalent of formaldehyde during the digestive process! Yep, and Monsanto still got away with putting it on the market. I watched all about Monsanto on the Discovery chasnnel a while back, and have read more than one article that says the same thing. So all this is a matter of publiv record...and you can research it if you want. Therefore, I quess I am more than half-way a corpse by now, because I have been consuming it ever since it came out. BTW,(Formaldehyde is what they use to embalm dead bodies.)
